The match was played at a high tempo from the start, with both sides demonstrating pace, commitment and technical skill. The early pressure came from Surbiton, jewelry scale who played with the confidence of a team that had won their last five league and cup matches by considerable margins. However, Wycombe s defence of Sophia Fallan, Abbey Wagge, Ellie Wheeler and Beth Wagge held strong, with Grace Calam in goal making a number of important saves.
As the first half progressed, jewelry scale Wycombe started to gain more of the possession with Anna Henderson, Rosie Campion and Milly Lloyd-Hunt battling for every ball in midfield. As a consequence, Wycombe were able to hold the press further up the pitch which allowed Emily Hacking, Laura Drysdale jewelry scale and Jenna Wyllie all to create jewelry scale a number of half-chances. It was therefore somewhat against the run of play at the end of the first half when the deadlock jewelry scale was broken by a goal from Surbiton that rounded off an excellent move.
The high level of intensity continued into the second half and it was clear that Wycombe were determined that they were going to make a match of it. Both teams were playing excellent hockey with chances created at either end. Georgie Grantham and Eloise Dunne worked tirelessly, helping to put Surbiton s defence under pressure and not allowing them to settle on the ball.
With fifteen minutes to go, both teams were pushing for the victory and levels of fitness and physical strength were put to the test. Grace Calam was increasingly called jewelry scale into action and a second Surbiton goal was disallowed for an infringement, whilst a late Wycombe short corner was well defended. The final whistle went with a draw being a fair result from a hugely entertaining match.
After one win and one defeat so far in their first season in the Premier League, this was a real litmus test against the league leaders, and Wycombe acquitted themselves very well and demonstrated that they can be competitive against anybody in this division.
